NEPOTISM

NEPOTISM

The word “Nepotism” can be defined as showing unmerited or undeserving favour to certain categories of people. The OXFORD ADVANCED LEARNER’S DICTIONARY(6th edition,pg.786) also defined Nepotism as giving unfair advantages to your own family if you are in position of power, especially by giving them jobs.
In addition to corruption and religious issues,Nepotism is another canker worm that has eaten so deeply into the country. When it comes to political appointments and nominations, most leaders prefer to stock these positions with people from their states, local governments, communities, churches, tribes, etc.In terms of admission into higher institutions of learning, it is a well known fact that these institutions would allocate a greater percentage of admission slots to candidates from the state or region which the institution is located.
The recent D.S.S recruitment exercise headed by Mallam Daura,a native of Katsina state, was heavily laced with controversy. The recruitment exercise, which allocated over 60% of the slot to Northerners, and less than 5% to easterners, was said to be an attempt by pres.Muhammadu Buhari, to punish the easterners, who reportedly didn’t vote him massively. All these go contrary to the federal character principle.
My view on the above is that the or avenue of enriching our kinsmen or to settle political scores with some individuals.I’d also love to suggest that, like ministerial appointments, certain guidelines should be laid down to govern appointment of people into government boards. As regards employers, guidelines should also be laid down to govern modes of employment.Private individuals should also be sensitised and enlightened on the country will not be free of nepotism unill we stop seeing political appointments as a. means need to employ the fittest and best of workers, and not compulsorily people from their home townsmeans need to employ the fittest and best of workers, and not compulsorily people from their home towns
