THE
PROGRAMMED PSYCHE OF NIGERIAN YOUTHS.
The word
“psyche” can be described as a kind of mentality or belief in one’s act that
something will occur or take place.Ask an average Nigerian youth what his
future aspirations are and you will be surprised at funny answers. You hear
things like “I want to work for a big oil company where all I have to do is sit
and bark orders”.In Nigerian universities today, we see most students
dedicating all their resources and energy towards making a 5.0 CGPA or
graduating with a first-class, with the belief that it qualifies them to just
saunter into any big establishment to get lucrative jobs.
However,
youths today have failed to realize the importance of all-round
developments. Most employers today no longer base their employments criteria on
just the certificate. The are also interested in knowing what other advantage
you can offer the company.Yes, good grades are essential but shouldn’t be the
only thing in one’s mind. There are instances where first-class graduates lost
lucrative jobs to second-class(lower) graduates, simply because the latter has
knowledge of certain skills which the former doesn’t.
The
certificate is fast losing it’s singular relevance in the labour market
today. This article is not channeled at encouraging mediocrity in
academics.Rather, it is a clarion call on youths to develop themselves in other
ways and possess more value than just their certificate. It is a well known fact
that the jobs available in Nigeria are relatively small, compared to the
millions of graduates churned out yearly from Nigerian institutions, and it is
one’s versatility that can come in handy when one is unable to get a good job.A
graduate of sociology who has adequate knowledge of computer, web designing or
blogging can eke out a living from these in the event of being unable to get an
employment that befits his certificate.
Conclusively,
Nigerian youths should learn a skill today and stop depending on the government
or their certificate to get them non-existent white collar
jobs.Decorations,baking,blogging,web designing,barbing and stylistics, learning
of musical instruments, e.t.c are valuable skills a student could learn and
possess alongside a certificate.
YES..Nigerian youths need to understand that good grades don't get good jobs alone any longer.. innumerable first class graduates roam the streets
